The Day From Hell

Today was the day from hell, and yet I’m in a surprisingly good mood. Here’s what went wrong:

  1. Woke up and the power was out. Why? Because we got 12” of wet, heavy snow overnight. Power came back on within minutes, though. So I watched an old episode of Angel in bed until the satellite cut out because of the still-raging snowstorm.
  2. Internet was out. Comcast’s online chat support didn’t know WTF was going on (they never do). I’m sure it was some guy in southeast Asia who doesn’t even know what snow is. But as usual, Comcast’s Twitter support team came through and told me that it was an area-wide outage and would be fixed at some point (props to @ComcastSteve and @ComcastBonnie—these are THE go-to people if you’re having issues with Comcast).
  3. Tried to hook my Droid up to my MacBook with PDANet but the 3G network in our area was so incredibly slow that I felt like I had dial-up again. Not sure if it was slow because of the storm or increased traffic because everyone else had the same idea I had. I checked and the fastest speed I was getting was .8Mb/s download and .04Mb/s upload. Needless to say, I didn’t get any work done.
  4. We’re remodeling our bathroom and don’t have a sink at the moment. What we do have are two pipes coming up out of the floor with shutoff valves on each. Well, I kicked one of them by accident when I walked into the bathroom and it started leaking and dripping into my kitchen. So had to turn off cold water to the bathroom. Which means the toilet tank has to be filled with a bucket of hot water from the tub (unless I want to lug buckets of cold water up from the kitchen, which just isn’t gonna happen).
  5. So the other half was working on the plumbing, soldering PEX connectors onto the old pipes. He was accessing all this through the kitchen ceiling (directly under the bathroom), and one of the old ceiling tiles FALLS ONTO THE TORCH he’s using. In case you didn’t know: blow torch + ancient ceiling tile = fire. I didn’t even realize what was going on until he had the fire out and the kitchen was filled with a mix of the powder from the fire extinguisher and smoke.

The good news is that about five minutes later the internet came back on. The only damage from the fire was that lone ceiling tile that fell. And now the sun is out and most of the snow has already melted.

I have no idea why I’m not a complete fucking wreck this afternoon after the day I’ve had, but I’m in a surprisingly good mood. Whatever. I’m just gonna roll with it…
